Update, 3/8/23: We’ve updated our guide with more places to see the Shout franchise, including some available for free without a subscription.

Shout

Legendary horror filmmaker Wes Craven started a trend of sarcastic, self-aware horror movies with the original Shout. Written by Kevin Williamson, Shout takes place in the small town of Woodsboro, California, where a masked killer stalks local teenagers. Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan and Jamie Kennedy star as the teenagers, with David Arquette as a local cop and Courteney Cox as a nosy reporter. The characters speculate on the “rules” of horror movies while trying to stay alive in the middle of one.

Shout it streams on Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial), free with ads on Pluto TV, and free through local libraries on Hoopla. It’s also available for digital purchase ($9.99+) and rental ($2.99+) on Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, and other digital outlets.

scream 2

Less than a year after the first film, Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson returned with scream 2, along with stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox and Jamie Kennedy. Campbell’s Sidney Prescott is now a college student, but she and her friends are attacked again by a new killer wearing the Ghostface mask. This time, the filmmakers play by the “rules” of horror sequels, while also introducing a new set of supporting characters to be butchered and furthering the story of Sidney’s trauma.

scream 3

The third Shout The film increases the focus on the meta elements of the series, as the new Ghostface begins killing cast members in a film based on the life story of Sidney Prescott. Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox return for director Wes Craven, in a story that shifts the balance towards a more self-deprecating comedy about gruesome terror, exemplified by a ridiculous supporting performance from Parker Posey. Initially intended to conclude the series, scream 3 plays by the “rules” about trilogies, with screenwriter Ehren Krueger replacing franchise creator Kevin Williamson.

scream 4

More than a decade after the third film, Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson reunite to scream 4, bringing back stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox to join a cast of new teen characters. Sidney Prescott returns to Woodsboro for the 15th anniversary of the initial murders, as a new Ghostface returns to murder local teens. The “rules” of this film covers the remakes as well as the burgeoning world of social media, finding new targets to satirise while providing more suspense and scares. scream 4 it also marked Craven’s last film before his death in 2015.

Shout (2022)

The fifth film in the series is also confusingly titled simply Shout, although it is not a reboot or remake. Directing team Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett replace the late Wes Craven, with Kevin Williamson on board as executive producer. Original stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox return for a story set once again in Woodsboro. A new group of young people, many with connections to the longtime characters, are targeted by Ghostface. The film reflects on current horror trends, including legacy sequels and so-called “elevated” horror.
