Details of season 2 of The Last Of Us begin to emerge

With the first season of HBO’s The Last of Us recently coming to a close, fans are wondering what will come next. Season 2 will adapt the events of 2020’s The Last of Us Part II, but how many more seasons will come and what can fans expect in terms of changes? Showrunner Craig Mazin spoke about season 2 in an interview with Collider. This story contains spoilers for The Last of Us..

Starting off, Mazin reiterated that season 2 won’t cover the events of The Last of Us Part II entirely, suggesting a third season is in the works as well. Game director Neil Druckmann made things even clearer, clearly referencing Season 3 in a recent interview with Kinda Funny when discussing the future of the show.

“There’s certainly no way to tell the remaining story in one more season,” Mazin said. We would need more time than that.

At the same time, Mazin said that he doesn’t want The Last of Us to last forever. This makes sense, considering Druckmann previously said that the show won’t be adapting anything beyond the games, and right now, there’s only The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II.

Mazin went on to say that Season 2 will start with a time jump, just like the video game, but there won’t be an extended time jump similar to what fans saw in House of the Dragon. Mazin said that Ellie will not be recast and, in fact, actress Bella Ramsey is now the same age (19) as Ellie in The Last of Us Part II.

“There will be no recast. Not on my watch,” Mazin said.

Finally, Mazin addressed the character of Abby, who is central to The Last of Us Part II’s story. Although she did not appear in the season 1 finale as some people believed, she will surely appear in season 2 because she is a very important character for the story.

“Every time you talk about Abby, you start to excite certain corners of the internet. All I can say is that Neil and I will adapt the story for television, as we see fit. It seems likely that the main characters who are crucial to the story I would be photographed, but no, right now, it’s too early to commit to anything in print, let’s put it that way,” Mazin said.

The character Dina is also expected to appear in The Last of Us Season 2, along with other new and returning characters.

Similar to season 1, which deviated from the source material in a number of ways with different storylines and characters, season 2 will follow the same formula. Some of the game’s changes could be “radically” different, Mazin said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The Last of Us Season 2 is expected to start filming this year, but no release date has been announced for the new season. As for the game series, Naughty Dog is creating a new multiplayer game The Last of Us. After that, Naughty Dog might make The Last of Us Part III, or they might not.
